this is kpix5 news. ght now.. n worse >> firefighters telling us they've never seen anything like it and if you think the weather is weird right now, this summer could be even worse. >> kristen ayers is in the east bay hill where a rare red flag warning just took effect. >> reporter: we've just learned this red flag warning will continue until thursday. we're talking gusty winds and brush so dry that it could make a wildfire situation devastating. the winds were so powerful in berkeley today that they snapped this tree on bonita way knocking it onto a house. the gusts are expected to pick up overnight and that's not the only problem. >> the fuels around here are

already depleted from moisture because of the drought. >> reporter: the drought has left the east bay hills parched and brown and sparking something the deputy fire chief airy webb has never seen in three decades -- avery webb has never seen in three decades of firefighting. >> red flag warnings in january. >> reporter: fire season typically runs june to november, but this year it's still going strong in january and firefighters think it could overlap into next june. >> i've never seen that before, but this may be one of those times where it occurs. >> different nozzle, different size for different size hose. >> reporter: the situation is so critical fire crews are still carrying this around, the lightweight gear and protective clothing they use during wildfire season which in a normal year would be packed away by now in storage. they're keeping their heavy wildland equipment handy, too. in case their worst fears come true. >> if something caught on fire, it could spread very rapidly

and end up involving many residences, many buildings. >> reporter: this red flag warning is not set to expire until thursday morning, but like you heard, we quo see warnings like this until the summer -- could see warnings like this until the summer months. >> there are numerous weather blogs now comparing the drought we're in currently to the one back in 1975 and 1976. it is as dry outside right now as it typically is in the summertime. so fire season continues until it rains and it's not going to for a while. extremely low humidity levels and wind in the higher elevations 13 to 15 miles per hour. so three nights and three days with high fire danger, that huge ridge of high pressure back, stronger and now we're facing the possibility of the dryest january on record here in the bay area. we're well on the way right now. we'll talk about any chance of rainfall and the chance also of

record highs coming up. andria borba is in san jose tonight where the fire threat isn't from mother nature but from a serial arsonist. >> reporter: that's right. so far the damage has been limited to books like these and buildings like this one that you see over here, but with these fires happening while people are sleeping the concern is that vulnerable citizens may die. as darkness falls over this neighborhood east of down up to san jose, the fear of who -- downtown san jose, the fear who may be lurking in the night roses. >> you're sleeping and the next thing you know there's a fire and you have to worry about everyone in the house and evacuate and everything. >> reporter: this video from one of the 13 fires is heed in neighbors' -- is etched in neighbors' brains. >> he's carrying some kerosene in his hand. >> reporter: the serial arsonist seems to have an ironclad m.o.

between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. when he strikes. antonio velazquez whose home was one of those burned thinks the suspect knows these streets well. >> two days before they find it in the apartment. this is one more, two time more. the front of my trailer is one time more. >> reporter: he says this sketch handed out by san jose police and fire is a good one. >> the night before. >> reporter: a san jose councilman organized watch groups to take shifts and patrol streets during the arsonist's prime fire starting hours. for a neighborhood accustomed to gang fights and shootings it's the fear of someone whose allegiances are unknown that's scary. >> it's not good. >> reporter: this church on san antonio has been hit not once, but, in fact, twice, one

of 13 arsons here in san jose. san jose fire and police are hoping to stop this guy before he lights any more fires. andria borba, kpix5. we have breaking news out of east palo alto where joe vazquez tells us police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. >> reporter: someone shot the young man as he walked down the street back over there. this is dumbarton avenue near bell. his body is still lying in the street between some parked cars just 1/2 block from his home. he's 19 years old and the first homicide victim of the year for palo alto. family members were immediately on the scene and were weeping in disbelief. tonight's murder scene is a block away from one yesterday just before 2:00 in the avenue. that 18-year-old's victim head

was grazed by a bullet. he is recovering from a superficial wound. police are trying to find out whether the two shootings are related as the investigation continues. reporting live in east palo alto, joe vazquez, kpix5. >> there were eight homicides in east palo alto last year. did you feel it? a 2.9 earthquake struck near vallejo about 8:30 tonight, small, but a bunch of you called to say that you did feel it. >> it was a large thud and boom. we if the it was either an earthquake or a truck hitting the building. >> of course, it was so small no damages or any injuries reported. a bay area woman died after falling from a seaside cliff in san diego. the 25-year-old was posing for a photo and apparently slipped yesterday afternoon in the sunset cliffs area. the popular spot is marked with signs warning the cliffs can be unstable. police say bachman fell 40 to

50 feet. >> there were two nurses here that hustled down the cliff and began cpr and first aide as well as a couple surfers my -- aid as well as a couple surfers my understanding and did their best. >> bachman was a cal graduate pursuing a masters degree at university of ill any chicago. tonight there are four more flu-related deaths in the bay area. two of them are in santa clara county and two more in santa cruz and san mateo counties. there's been a run on flu vaccines. now some pharmacies are running out, but they say they are ordering extra doses to keep up with the demand. a petaluma meat processor is recalling more than 41,000 pounds of beef products. the usda says the products from the rancho feeding corporation were produced without a full federal inspection, so they are considered unsafe for human consumption. the recalled products include

oxtail, live and tripe. the foster farms -- liver and tripe. foster farms is shutting down to address new food safety measures. the usda shut the plant down last week due to cockroaches. after 40 years in congress one of the most powerful democrats on capitol hill is calling it quits. bay area representative george miller is retiring. the contra costa county democrat has been a leading voice on education and labor issues. his proudest accomplishment? >> my work on behalf of children with special needs, writing that legislation back in 1974. obviously the affordable care act, the national healthcare reform to me is so exciting. >> miller is 68. he was elected to the house of representatives at age 29 and now senator chuck schumer needs

a new roommate and tweet whoever it is must like cold cereal. first there was that crazy traffic jam and tonight there's a new storm brewing for new jersey governor chris christie. it has to do with how he spent millions in superstorm sandy money. >> reporter: it looks like a campaign ad. >> the jersey shore is open. >> reporter: starring the governor and his family. >> because we're stronger than the storm. >> reporter: but it's not. this ad used $4.7 million out of 25 million in superstorm sandy relief fund, federal money to promote tourism at the jersey shore, a campaign to show jersey was back. a new federal investigation will now look deeper to determine if christie running for reelection at the time spent the federal sandy funds improperly to produce the tourism ad starring him and his family. >> taxpayer dollars that could have been used for sandy relief were used for ads promoting the governor because he was in them with his family during an

election campaign. >> reporter: the governor's office says the plan was approved by the obama administration and that the ads were developed with the goal of effectively communicating that the jersey shore was open for business during the first summer after sandy. last year the ads raised eyebrows immediately even from some fellow republicans on capitol hill. >> i think yeah, come to new jersey, but it's like i don't want to pay for ads for someone's advertising out of sandy relief fund. it gives the whole thing a black eye. >> reporter: the investigation will take several months to rule on wrongdoing. >> governor christie is scheduled to deliver his state of the state address tomorrow. it should be interesting. 49er fans shut out, the seahawks refusing to sell tickets to anyone in california, but is that really legal? >> and how could it happen? a plane lands on a runway at the wrong airport. that wasn't the only problem. >> just in time to destroy your new year's resolution dunk indonuts plans

49ers fans will have to be prepared to drop some serious cash. these 49er fans hope to cut into that homefield advantage at sunday's game at centurylink field, a notoriously loud stadium. tonight they discussed carpooling up to seattle at their monthly booster club meeting in santa clara. >> a lot of groups are arranging for limousines and bus services. >> it's going to be a hell of a time and seattle fans are afraid of all the san franciscans. >> reporter: so afraid apparently the seahawks blocked ticket sales to california residents. you can buy tickets on the secondary market, but what these fans found on the sites wasn't encouraging. >> they're going up into the hundreds of thousands for really decent seats. >> this takes it one step farther where you're really saying you can't buy them through ticketmaster and ticketmaster is supposed to be

a nationwide company. i'll put that in maybe the realm of poor sportsmanship. >> reporter: the move is not unprecedented. >> it's within the spirit of the rules of the national football league. i actually respect it, that you're trying to do for your team, put them in the best possible position to win. >> reporter: most of these guys say the tickets are just too pricey, but they'll save their funds for that super bowl trip. again tickets through ticketmaster and the seahawks sold out this morning within an hour. so fans are left looking at sites like stubhub. you can see here tickets are going for $122,000. that's one ticket. the cheapest tickets in the nose bleed seats are going for about $400 apiece. you also have to factor in hotel, air fare and food costs. a lot of these fans we spoke to tonight say that is just too much for them. they'll be there in spirit, but they're confident that their

team can handle a tough crowd. a constitutional attorney has some legal questions about restricting those ticket sales. only two -- sales only to people in certain states. >> this is a championship game in which a trophy of the league is being given. the 49ers are a member of that league. they're clearly discriminating against people from other states. >> the attorney there, mr. kravitz, says the nfl trying to control the event is an outrageous move since the stadium is owned by the public. two veteran pilots are grounded tonight after an airport snafu and you really have to scratch your head at this one. >> reporter: the southwest airlines 737 took off without incident today after landing at the wrong airport last night. southwest flight 4013 with 124 passengers on board was headed from chicago's midway airport to branson airport in missouri.

somehow the pilots mistakenly landed at grand clark airport some 7 miles away and with a much shorter runway, only 3,700 feet, roughly half the lengths of branson's runway. after landing the pilots slammed on the brakes. no you know was about hurt. passengers said they were -- no one was hurt. passengers said they were pitched forward by the sudden stop. >> the runway maybe looked like about 3 blocks long and that's it and we were the only plane sitting out there. so it was kind of hard to imagine that they didn't know they shouldn't have been there. >> reporter: the plane stopped just before the runway ended at an embankment overlooking a four-lane highway. passenger scott schieffer took these photographs of the cockpit and runway exiting the plane. >> it was a surreal scene with all of the flashing lights and passengers deplaning. >> reporter: wrong airport landings are not unheard of. in november a 737 cargo plane landed 9 miles off course at the wrong airport in wichita,

be nonexistent. what a great shot here, the top of the sutro tower looking down on the beautiful city of san francisco the it's looking glorious on a monday night, kpix5 hi-def doppler. this is not what i want to see, but it is what it is, another dry night, clear night, chilly in the north bay, below freezing in santa rosa, 20 outside the cities, oakland 43, mountain view waking up to 39 degrees tomorrow morning. we have ourselves a football game, big one, 9ers, seahawks, nfc championship game in seattle. there twill be showers around there. cloudy skies, 50 degrees, your kickoff temperature sunday afternoon at 3:30. look at the storm track. it not anywhere close. sometimes it's a close call. sometimes it's like don't even worry about it. the storm track is in alaska. it is closer to juneau than here in the bay area.

the area of low pressure over the hudson bay is creating a backlog. as long as that low doesn't move, our ridge won't move and our forecast once again will not change. the ridge is going nowhere for the next week or two or three. so nights chilly and clear, record highs, one today in oakland, more tomorrow, wednesday and thursday and rainfall, no, not a chance for at least the next seven to 10 days. we need it, but we will the get it. the highs tomorrow san francisco downtown 68 degrees, san jose 69, los altos, redwood city, gillwood, campbell upper 60s, 68 pleasant hill and pittsburg, 67 in sausalito, 71 in sonoma, clear lake 70s, st. helena 73 degrees. wednesday is the warmest day. thursday still 70, friday still warm and he even over the weekend we'll be in -- and even over the weekend we'll be in the mid-60s and not a drop of rain in sight.
